What is Frontal fibrosing alopecia FFA ?

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia FFA is a type of scarring hair loss that mainly affects the hairline at the front and sides of the scalp. It often causes the hairline to gradually recede in a band-like pattern and can also affect the eyebrows and other body hair.

FFA happens when inflammation attacks the hair follicles. Over time, this inflammation can permanently damage and replace follicles with scar tissue, which means hair generally cannot regrow once a follicle has been destroyed. The exact cause isn’t known; hormonal, immune-system, and genetic factors may all contribute. It occurs most commonly in postmenopausal women, although premenopausal women and men can develop it too.

Typical signs include a slowly receding frontal or temporal hairline, eyebrow thinning or loss, redness or scaling around individual hairs near the advancing hairline, itching/burning/tenderness in some people, and sometimes small facial bumps.

A dermatologist can usually recognize the pattern with scalp examination and dermoscopy, although a scalp biopsy is sometimes needed to confirm the diagnosis.
